Rainy Nights In Georgia

Wednesday, May 1 - Sunday, May 5, 2013

We continued our journey north on the ICW. The Georgian landscaped changed from sand to huge marshlands, miles wide. The rainy weather did not improve the view. Through rain spotted windows we viewed Jekyll Island. An interesting stop but not this trip. It was know as the millionaire's playground. The Vanderbilt's, Morgan's and Rockefeller's all had 'cottages' on the island.

Caution: Wave Action Is Higher Than It May Appear!
As I see it; An inlet is a break in a barrier island that leads to the ocean. A sound is an inlet spanning a larger body of water with tributaries, current, tides and wind that added to it make crossing them a bit more interesting! St. Andrew Sound fit this description. These were the roughest waves we have experienced since Thunder Bay outside of Alpena MI (twice!!). Waves crashed over the bow and it was ..... fun!

A Noisy Flock of Terns Found Dinner in Our Wake
The winds increased as we neared the docks at Brunswick Landing Marina.(Typical!) Georgia's ICW coast has 9 foot tides, the highest we have seen. Luckily that equates to floating docks! Otherwise boaters would be adjusting their lines almost hourly! The waters are shallow and the tides are great. When planning a day's cruise this is crucial data to check. No problem, we have an app for that! We were joined at dinner that night by Tim, a sail boater and his golden retriever, Laddie. Rainy weather is time to catch up on the blog and do laundry. After 2 days, Tony and Shirley moved on. By the 3rd day Irish Attitude did the same. Just before leaving we saw Dave from MAIA. He and Joy were leaving their boat here and heading home by car. If not for the rains we would have walked the dock or dinghy around and found them. Many boats were left here. Owners will return next winter and head south.

The Day We Left Brunswick Was Not Any Better!

North of Sapelo Sound
We caught up with Headquarters at New Teakettle Creek Anchorage. They invited us over for dinner but I had just gotten dry and didn't wish to dinghy over in the wind. Our boat's stern blew from left to right and back again passing the same sail boat over and over! We thought we would stay another night at Teakettle but decided to move on to Queen Bess Creek, north of St. Catherine's Sound. What a difference a day makes.... Our rainy nights in Georgia cleared to blue skies. While reading my Kindle on the bridge (of the boat) I thought I heard baby pigs squealing. Wait, I know that was snorting I just heard. Out came the binoculars. The piglets scampered to higher ground but Mike and I caught glimpse of Mama sow as she rutted along the banks of the island. Headquarters chose the anchorage across the ICW as it was deeper and were surprise to find Tim and Laddie were anchored there also.

Peaceful
Next stop? It usually changes as we move along. Our weather reprieve was over, the clouds were back. Just before Thunderbolt, we passed the Moon River (for those of you not old enough to remember the lyrics Johnny Mercer made famous in the song composed by Henry Mancini and sung by Andy Williams!) Mr. Mercer lived up the river in Savannah. (Savannah has it's own section.) He also wrote Jingle Bells!

"Moon River, wider than a mile / I'm crossin' you in style some day".

Huge, Caroline!

We followed Headquarters into Hinckley Marine because Tony needed some work done. As long as we were here..... the Irish Attitude had an electrical problem that was puzzling everyone. Our batteries were not charging as we motored along. This made anchoring difficult with only enough 'juice' to keep the frig and anchor light going. Of course we had a generator but we can't run it constantly. Michele, a Frenchman, at Hinkley found a ground fault. He corrected it, replaced our house batteries and voila!

Jim and Joy (that we met in Mackinaw City) crossed their wake and returned to the Savannah area. They borrowed a friends vehicle and picked up the four of us for dinner at Tubby's Tank House.

Shirley and I borrowed the Hinkley truck to pick up a few groceries. One morning we rode our bikes to the local cemetery. I love to discover the history cemeteries have to share.
