Savannah, what a grand city! It is full of southern charm. We docked at the city dock along the river walk. It's not a private place but that was not what we were seeking. Shirley, Tony and I got a sneak peek at Savannah when we rode our bikes in from Hinkley Marine. Mike stayed with the our boat that was being serviced. The trek took us through a congested part of Savannah, Target, Home Depot, etc. but when we arrived at the waterfront, wow! With the bikes secure, we headed to the waterfront. One realizes quickly the charm of Savannah is in the cities layout. Streets run parallel to the river or perpendicular to it. There are 24 'squares' or parks in a few mile radius. Statues, fountains and markers share the history of this unique port city. It is well preserved rather then raised and rebuilt right down to the cobblestone streets that line the waterfront. Rather than take the trolley tour we set out on our bikes again. This time Mike was able to enjoy the sites.

The History is Reflected in the Architecture |
When ships pulled into port they would unload the stones from their ballast that kept the ship stable at sea. Savannah used them to pave the water front.
