The South Carolina coastal area is called 'The Low Country'. For obvious reasons I would say. Tidal waters change the landscape. First it's water .... now it's grass.

The first thing you need to know about Beaufort, S.C. is how to pronounce it correctly! It's Bew fert, beautiful. It's a small town where the downtown is still very much alive. The couple on the tug next to us started the loop from Ft. Myers. It makes us realize how faded our burgee is getting. They mentioned seeing 3 other tugs traveling together. I think one is Sea-N-Red! We rode bikes around town with Shirley and Tony before returning to the boat for dinner.

The Landscape is Changing |
(The next port was Charleston but it deserves it's own entry!)
Sea-N-Red pulled into Charleston just after we got settled. It was good to see Phyllis and Buddy again. They were traveling with 2 other tugs and made a quite a trio. Yellow, blue and red. Three sizes also, like the 3 Bears. They were on a schedule and were traveling more miles a day so we decided to follow them on to Georgetown.

The plan was to anchor out but the anchorage was already full and with the way our boat swings we didn't want to risk the tight quarters. So Mike pulled Irish Attitude into a slip at Georgetown Landing Marina for the night. We joined the tug trio for dinner in town at the Rice Paddy. The building was formerly a bank and the vault was now used as a wine cellar. On the way back to the boat we ran into Joy and Bill from Proud Lady. They stopped over later and we got all caught up on each other's adventures. There were a few more loopers on the dock too. Auk, Love N Life, and some R lovin. If you have seen the movie Grease, you'll understand why Dan and Sandy chose this boat name! John Travolta played Dan and Olivia Newton-John's character was Sandy. They seemed like a fun couple so I hope we see them along the way.

It took only 1 day to realize that the tugs were traveling at a faster speed than was cost efficient for the Irish Attitude, so we waved as the left us in their wake. The next section was quite serene. The cypress swamps were not really swampy looking.

Mike and I went as far as Barefoot Landing in Myrtle Beach that day. The marina was a single face dock so we pulled in behind another boat. It was bike week and vendors had trailers all over the parking lot. We walked around the outdoor mall area to stretch our legs and ate a local restaurant.

Tomorrow we were heading out during low tide. The section ahead is cut out of rock, shallow on the sides. By going through at low tide we could see what we were dealing with.
